We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with Lesley Zellers of Recipe for Crazy (blog, shop) on a custom print for our adoption fundraiser. SO EXCITED. We are going to unveil the print this weekend! It’s beautiful and wonderful and we love it. And Lesley is THE BOMB. Start following her blog Recipe for Crazy!
It’s funny how life works out and how small our town is.
Lesley’s sister is the infamous Oklahoma blogger Ashley Ann (we’ll get back to the Lesley connection in a second). Like everyone on the planet, I am a huge fan of Ashley’s blog, Under the Sycamore. A few years back, I was reading Ashley’s blog and came across a picture she posted of her family. I was instantly all, “OMG! THAT’S CHRIS!”
In a totally weird moment, I realized that Ashley had married one of my friends (and fellow choir member) from high school. And then it clicked why Ashley looked so familiar – she went to the church that I visited pretty often during middle and high school.
Fast forward and I ended up dropping into one of her infamous SnapShops to fine-tune my ninja photography skills (which, if you are interested at all in learning the basics of photography, Ashley’s online SnapShops are incredible). It was such a great experience and so fun to have a chance to rekindle my friendship with Chris and Ashley both.
The next spring, Ashley sent out a call needing baby models for her spring SnapShop session. Dare Devil busted out his best grins along side a few other beautiful little tots, one of them being Lesley’s daughter, sweet P. Here’s a picture Ashley took at the session:
I remembered Lesley instantly from church too! So funny. And Sweet P was (and is) pretty much the cutest thing ever. I was coaching Dare Devil on how to catch her eye between takes. :)
In 2011, I heard that Ashley and Chris were trying to adopt and needed a few family pictures for their home study, so I jumped at the chance to help them. You can read about the session and see more pictures here.
(Funny side note: Ashley’s site is pinned like crazy on Pinterest, so the pictures were immediately all over the site. When people found out who I was, and found my site, I began getting emails with creepy questions about Ashley. “Is she nice in person?”, “Is she shorter or taller than she seems in pictures?”, “what color is her hair?”. It got weird…and hilarious).
It has been amazing to watch Ashley and Chris’ journey to adoption on Ashley’s blog. And I love seeing Lesley and her family make appearances, as well as keeping up with Recipe for Crazy.
When we decided that we were adopting, and knew we needed to raise some funds, Lesley immediately came to mind because of her passion for adoption. Also, she’s my favorite artist on Etsy right now. I want to wallpaper my house with her prints. I reached out to her (and then waited anxiously for her to reply) and then DIED when I heard back and heard how excited she was to help. We love this girl!
Adoption is such an incredible thing. It’s so much more than one family being united with their child. It’s a community and it’s a shared experience so many can relate to and, at times, sympathize with. I’m so lucky to have these awesome ladies in my network and in my life. They’re both so passionate about adoption and about helping families adopt.
Lesley is incredible. And she was amazing to work with. What she created for us is special and we love it. Go visit Lesley’s shop and buy lots of stuff!
We will be back soon to share the print that Lesley created for us. Can’t wait to show it to you guys!
